Cozumel is an island about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide located just off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula south of Cancun. Cozumel rivals Grand Cayman as one of the best diving and snorkeling areas in the Caribbean. The ancient Mayan ruins, located primarily on Mexico's mainland, also attract tourists from around the world. Cozumel's Chankanaab National Park offers cruise passengers the best of both worlds with offshore reefs for diving and snorkeling, and a Mayan tourist area. Cozumel Shore Excursions

Some ships stop at Playa del Carmen first to drop off passengers taking excursions to the Mayan Ruins before docking in Cozumel. Passengers going on excursions on their own can grab a taxi at the pier in Cozumel. Cruise passengers interested in shopping can head to downtown San Miguel. Tours of Mayan ruins include Chichen Itza (11 hours, $95) and the Ruins of Tulum (6 hours, $75). Both tours typically depart from Playa Del Carmen and include a long bus ride to and from the Mayan ruins area. Snorkel and dive tours range from 3 to 5 hours and $30 to $80.
